How to Plan the Perfect Snowy Family Session in Colorado

Hey there, snow-lovers!

If you're hoping for that magical “winter wonderland” vibe in your family portraits snow falling, boots crunching, cheeks glowing, let’s talk timing, location, and how we’ll make it all come together.

Here’s how to set your session up for snowy success:

✅ Snow Timing & Logistics Tips

When to Book for Snow

In Colorado, snow is possible from October through April, but the sweet spot for reliable snow is late November to early April. For the most consistent snow coverage (that soft, dreamy blanket of white), December through February is your best bet.

To stay flexible and snow-ready, I always recommend:

  • Choosing two possible dates: a main date + a backup (just in case Mother Nature has other plans).
  • Picking a high-elevation location (the higher we go, the more likely we’ll have snow).
  • Having a contingency plan in place — I’ll handle this! Think: weather checks, flexible timing, and backup spots if needed.

“Because snow coverage is never fully guaranteed at lower elevations, we’ll pick a high-altitude spot and I’ll monitor the forecast. If we don’t get enough snow the night before, we’ll either shift our time (morning vs. afternoon) or use our backup date.”

💬 How I’ll Communicate With You

I’ll stay in close touch leading up to your session. A little sample of what I might say:

“Because snow isn’t guaranteed at lower elevations, we’ll pick a high-altitude spot and I’ll watch the forecast. If we don’t get enough snow the night before, we’ll either shift the time of day or use our backup date.”

My goal is to keep things stress-free, and to deliver gorgeous snowy portraits that feel relaxed, cozy, and totally you.

🧤 What to Wear (and What I’ll Bring!)

Dress for warmth and style — think layers, boots, and maybe even a knit hat or scarf that adds personality. If your kiddos love it, we can even bring along a sled or toss a few snowballs for fun!

Behind the scenes, I’ll plan lighting with the snow in mind (spoiler alert: snow is basically nature’s reflector). With my portable lighting setup, we’ll keep skin tones natural and your images crisp — even if the light gets tricky.

Snowy Location Options

All of these spots are within reach from Northern/Central Colorado and offer awesome snowy backdrops:

1. Breckenridge, CO

A charming mountain town with great snow odds and beautiful backdrops — ski slopes, forests, mountain views.

This spot is perfect for late afternoon shoots (my fave: 1–2 hours before sunset). I’ll scout a quieter trail so your family isn’t photo-bombed by tourists.

2. Garden of the Gods + Pikes Peak Viewpoint

Imagine stunning red rocks dusted with snow — the contrast is breathtaking.

This area is lower in elevation, so I’ll only schedule here if a fresh snowstorm has just rolled through the foothills. If not, we’ll head to the mountains instead.

3. Gunnison Valley

Snow here can stick around from November through April — it’s a winter dreamland!

It’s a bit more of a drive, but if you’re up for an adventure or want a destination-session feel, it’s worth it. (Bonus: I can build in a cocoa break afterward!)
